Gut microbiota: Its role in diabetes and obesity

چکیده
Neil Munro is Visiting Professor in Primary Care Diabetes, Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, University of Surrey. The gut microbiota is a community of microogranisms that live in the gut and intestinal tract. The microbiota consists of bacteria, archaea and eukarya, as well as viruses, but is predominantly populated by anaerobic bacteria. Relationships between gut microbiota constituents and a wide range of human conditions such as enterocolitis, rheumatoid arthritis, some cancers and type 1, type 2 diabetes and obesity have been postulated. This article covers the essentials of the gut microbiota as well as the evidence for its role in diabetes and obesity.

Nowadays, metabolomics studies are performed with different approaches to identify biomarkers, clarify the underlying mechanisms of diseases and achieve novel treatment strategies. In this context, gut microbiota-derived metabolites are known as one of the most important mediators of gut microbiota effects on human health and various diseases. Due to the inefficiency of conventional therapies i...

Background: Obesity is a complex disorder influenced by various genetic and environmental factors. It has been shown that gut microbiota, which colonizes gastrointestinal tract, has a substantial role as an environmental factor in the pathophysiology of obesity. Since the composition of gut microbiota alters with regard to different criteria, such as ethnicity, geographical location, diet, life...
متن کاملBeyond gut microbiota: understanding obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Obesity and type 2 diabetes are metabolic diseases that have reached epidemic proportions worldwide. Although their etiology is complex, both result from interplay between behaviour, environment and genetic factors. Within ambient determinants, human overall gut bacteria have been identified as a crucial mediator of obesity and its consequences. Gut microbiota plays a crucial role in gastro-int...
